Mini Dinosaur and Horse Cakes

What do you do when you have a son and a daughter that have birthdays a few days apart?  One answer is to serve a variety of cupcake flavors to the guests and order mini cakes for the kids.

For the son, I made a 4″ round chocolate cake and molded a marshmallow fondant dinosaur for the top.

For the daughter, I made a 4″ round vanilla cake and molded a marshmallow fondant horse for the top.

Happy Birthday Ben and Mya!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Cake

I love this theme for a birthday party.  It was based on Eric Carle’s book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

The birthday boy was turning 1, so he also needed his own smash cake.  Happy 1st Birthday Brock!

Soccer Celebration

My son’s final soccer game was this weekend, so we celebrated with a party.  Cupcakes are always easy serving, especially to kids who can’t wait for cake to be sliced!

I made a cupcake cake and used the frozen buttercream transfer method to make the soccer ball.  Great season Pirates!

Hawaii Themed Dessert Table

A long time friend of mine is getting married in June in Hawaii.  What a great destination wedding location!  For her shower, we celebrated with a Hawaii theme.

The desserts we served were cupcakes, cheesecakes and chocolate covered strawberries.

Turtle Cake

A few years ago, my husband requested a turtle cake.  When we designed it, we used chocolate cake, caramel buttercream frosting, chocolate and caramel drizzle and finally topped it with pecans.  That cake was wonderful and rich.  This year for his birthday, he asked that we flip the flavors.  To do this, I needed a caramel cake recipe, which are not as popular as I would have hoped.  I decided on a caramel pound cake recipe and it turned out moist and delicious.

We filled the cake with caramel buttercream and then frosted the cake with rich chocolate frosting and of course topped it with chocolate, caramel and pecans.  The taste testers agreed that they liked it better than the original cake.  Hmm, I am not sure that I agree with that one, but it was delicious! Triple Hazelnut Cake with Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

My neighbor requested a hazelnut cake for her 40th birthday and since I had not made one before, we had to go on the hunt for a recipe.  We found the recipe for this cake on the Food Network website.  I like to pick recipes that have solid reviews and this one was rated 5 stars.  It did not disappoint!

The recipe had 3 ingredients for the main hazelnut flavor and they were hazelnuts, Frangelico and hazelnut extract.  This cake was nothing short of scrumptious.  Happy Birthday to my good friend and neighbor!

St. Patrick’s Day Snoopy

Today we celebrate not only St Patrick’s Day, but our neighbor’s double digit birthday.  She requested a Snoopy cake and her mom requested a “green” velvet cake to surprise the guests.

For the cake, I substituted green food coloring for red in this red velvet cake recipe.  Snoopy’s house was made from rice crispy treats and covered in fondant.  Snoopy was molded from marshmallow fondant.  Happy 10th Birthday Sam!

Owl Cupcakes

Over the last year, I have seen Owl themed bedding for babies all over the internet and always wondered if I would ever get the chance to make something coordinating.  This week I got my chance with these adorable owl cupcakes!

These were made to celebrate a new baby, whose room has an owl theme.  The cupcakes were vanilla and topped with chocolate buttercream.  The owls were made out of marshallow fondant.

1st Birthday Girl

I always enjoy girly themes since I rarely get to decorate with them.  This birthday cake is for a one year old birthday party.  The cake is chocolate gluten free.  The mom requested that I use decorations, such as flowers and butterflies with green and white as the base colors.  I hope Chelsea had a wonderful 1st birthday!
